The market which is still held weekly, every Friday, in Piazza del Commercio and in the vicinity, has very ancient roots. It was authorized with a decree of King Francis I of Bourbon of 3 September 1827, which made a pre-existing custom positive. The first Friday market, after obtaining the sovereign resolution, was held on 12 October of that year.
In the past, the Friday market was much larger than today, since the markets had great importance in the peasant economy, allowing the sale or purchase of food products, tools, raw materials and fabrics.
Today the weekly market is a pleasant occasion that brings the square to life. The traditional itinerant traders are flanked by street food vendors, such as porchetta, turkey alla canzanese or neretese and roast chicken.
