The archaeological evidence – in particular the discovery of the remains of amphorae and containers for liquids – confirms that the wine-growing and olive-growing vocation of the land of Controguerra has very ancient roots. Some, fantasizing about certain passages from Book III of the Stories of Polybius, have imagined that Hannibal's army, with its famous leader, after the victory on Lake Trasimeno had stopped to eat and rest their horses right on the counter-war territory. Under the circumstance, Hannibal and the Carthaginian soldiers would have appreciated the quality of the local wine. Obviously Polybius does not offer such precise geographical references, but the legend, already widespread in the last century, has met with considerable success.
