The ancient Bourbon oil mill in the town

Category(s): Palaces monuments and finds

The old mill of the town was located near the church of the Madonna delle Grazie and was put into operation in the first half of the nineteenth century (the first document that mentions it dates back to 1852), in the Bourbon era, by Donna Carolina Massimi and Antonio Flajani. Today the structure is a private house belonging to the Di Natale Bizzarri family and is located between Via Guglielmo Marconi and Via Stradale della Madonna delle Grazie.

At the time of activation, the oil mill was located in Via Icona-Riparossa and was one of the three masonry buildings on the street, together with the church of the Madonna delle Grazie and a villa located to the west of this, which no longer exists. The opening of an oil mill near the town greatly simplified the operations of milling the olives, since, previously, the farmers who owned olive groves near the village had to go down with carts to the one located in Piane Tronto, as after the closure of the convent of San Francesco, which had its own, the town was left without oil mills.

The Bourbon oil mill in the town was avant-garde for its time, with a "Genoese-style" operating mechanism. Furthermore, it was equipped with a canalization system that allowed the discharge of impurities outside the complex.

The restorations completed between 2005 and 2007 made it possible to recover the building and save some components of the original structure. In particular, the brick arch and the powerful hinges of the first entrance door are still visible on the east wall. This was very large, to allow the carts to enter the complex and unload the olives directly into the millstones, which worked with animal traction. Since until the end of the 19th century this building had no other houses nearby, the main entrance looked towards Piazza del Commercio. The oil mill (later called lu trappitə də Ngicchə) continued to function until the middle of the last century, when farmers began to prefer more modern mills with electric millstones.

On the east wall of the currently existing building there is also a niche containing a votive statue, in memory of the counter-war devotion to Maria Santissima delle Grazie.
