Less than an hour's journey from Controguerra we find Ascoli Piceno, called the city of a hundred towers, due to the many noble or bell towers scattered along the territory. Following the itinerary of the towers it is possible to admire the Ercolani tower, the Gemelli towers and many other towers which over time have been transformed into houses or bell towers, scattered among the rue, the streets of Ascoli.
Also known as the city of ceramics and coppersmiths, Ascoli Piceno boasts an ancient tradition handed down and still preserved in the historic center of the city and in the various museums, including the Museum of Ceramics and the potters. Another characteristic activity of the place is that of the coppersmith, true masters of copper processing and the creation of tools.
A unique scenario opens up before the tourist once he arrives in Piazza del Popolo, characterized by the travertine slab flooring, which, after a rainy day, creates an exciting mirror effect. The oldest square in the city is Piazza Arringo, full of important palaces and buildings that tell the story of the city, such as the Fonzi palace, the Arengo palace, the cathedral of Sant'Emilio, the Panichi palace and many other buildings worthy of visit. For those who love walking, the Augustan Roman Bridge will be a real discovery, as it is also possible to walk inside it, through a corridor whose entrance is located in the door of the adjacent building. Due to its construction characteristics it is considered one of the most significant bridges in terms of technique of Roman civilization.
For lovers of relaxation and food, a unique place to spend time sipping an excellent coffee is Caffè Meletti located in a corner of Piazza del Popolo, characteristic for its Art Nouveau style which since the 1900s has been offering hot drinks with the addition of Anisetta, a typical liqueur based on green anise. It is said that King Vittorio Emanuele visited the city in 1908 to buy L'Anisetta and decreed Caffè Meletti "the Supplier of the Royal House". A place where even Hemingway sat down for a coffee and included among the 150 historic cafés in Italy where it is still possible to meet to discuss while savoring an excellent coffee.
Anyone who hears Ascoli thinks of stuffed olives, the main typical product already famous in Roman times. A laborious dish, which requires time and preparation, it is part of the richest and most varied Ascoli "fritto misto" which includes artichoke lamb chops and "cremini", fried custard. The food and wine tour can only be completed by accompanying everything with a good local wine and finishing with the typical dessert of the Marche region, the Frustingo, made with dried fruit and figs.
