In the 1990s, the municipal administrations and winegrowers favored the characterization and promotion of an excellent product of the counter-guerrilla area: the local wine, produced since ancient times and much appreciated abroad as well.
With D.M. of 20 August 1996 the Denomination of Controlled Origin (DOC) of the "Controguerra" wines was officially recognized and the relative production disciplinary was approved.
The following year, with resolution of the Municipal Council n. 155 of 15 May 1997, Controguerra, on the strength of its vocation and international fame in the oenological field, became a member of the National Association of Wine Cities.
The National Association of Wine Cities was born in Siena in 1987 by the will of a group of thirty-nine mayors who decided to give life to this association, to help relaunch the image and quality of Italian wine.
The Cities of Wine ideally represent an itinerary through Italy of historic villages, cities of art, by the sea or in the mountains, cities that have an oenological and gastronomic history to tell. A network of Municipalities with a wine vocation which together form a circuit of hotels, farm holidays, restaurants, wine bars, wine bars and cellars producing quality wines.
To these important and prestigious sector awards, typical of the Municipality of Controguerra, are added the many awards achieved by the individual farms present in the area, many of which are dedicated to viticulture and oenology, which are traditionally called cellars by the villagers.
To encourage the rediscovery of the territory and further spread the cult of oenology and responsible choice, the Wine Festival was established at the end of the nineties, an annual summer event organized by the Enoteca Comunale di Controguerra and focused on wine , on the oenological and gastronomic products of the territory and on the village atmosphere.
