Controguerra

Set on the charming Teramo hills, against the background of a unique landscape where the unequal hills seem to create an almost picturesque background, Controguerra stands 267 meters above sea level, boasting, in addition to the enchanting panorama, a very pleasant temperate climate due to the proximity of the sea and the mountains of the Lake.
Over an area of 23 square kilometres, Controguerra is home to about 2,300 inhabitants distributed between the city center and the surrounding countryside where, in addition to modern villas, there are also ancient farmhouses and precious pinciaie.
The territory of Controguerra is part of Val Vibrata, which extends along a valley crossed by the Vibrata stream, between hills and flat areas.
Its roots lie in a more ancient past than one might imagine. Certain evidence of this is the numerous archaeological finds found throughout the municipal area: some are collected in a room in the Town Hall, while others are found in important museums in Rome and Florence.
From them it can be deduced that its foundation can be traced back to prehistoric and Roman times, even if it experienced its maximum splendor in the Renaissance period.

The emblem
The current coat of arms of the municipality of Controguerra is a Samnite shield surmounted by a municipal crown with a split partition representing two armed knights facing each other in the upper part and four golden bars on a blue background in the lower part.

Over the centuries the coat of arms has undergone significant changes and has been enriched with various details but the element of the two knights preparing to fight has always been present. In the most ancient representations known to us – in particular the one present on the title page of the Ancient Land Registry of 1664 stands out for its precision and beauty – the two warriors were depicted armed with spears crossing each other and the horses were not rampant, but the tension of the clash was still captured .

A suggestive theory on the origin of the name "Controguerra" actually wants it to have been born following a serious war event that in ancient times affected its lands and the representation of the two warriors who are preparing to clash in its municipal coat of arms could be a dramatization or an attempt to mythologize this event and with it the origins of the country.
